Four Dimensional Mural Making is a mural
style proposed by Scape Martinez in which a mural transcends
its ordinary two-dimensions and eventually escapes the
three-dimensionality of it's confines and it's traditional
space.
One principle is to be as "non objective"
as possible, but to stay within the confines of the stated
subject matter for the artwork. This "subject matter"
has to be anchored in the architecture of the space, since
you want to be "in" it and not "on" it.
This along with the 360 degree viewpoint creates a composition
that is abstract in nature and is open to interpretation
by the viewer from multiple sight lines.
For example, try to see all six sides of
a box at the same time, and even what's inside the box simultaneously.
The other principle is what happens when
we create a space for dialogue with those components that
are not readily seen, but sensed (ie. sense of memory, time,
etc..) Using shadows, light, and perspective certain
"gaps' will appear in the composition, and in those "gaps"
the eye retina can connect with the mind and fill in all
the blanks, using the viewers own personal histories and
knowledge to come to his own conclusions about the space.
So when we are talking about four dimension
murals, that includes and controls the third dimension and
all it's properties. But the fourth dimension is The Spirit,
The Source, The Energy, and we want to tap into that through
the art making process. It is the "openness"of
the composition that allows that 4th dimension to even be
possible.
Every human being has a spiritual essence
as well as a physical essence. So in turn, we want the artwork
to have a spiritual component to balance out it's physical
components. As creators, we use our creative/artistic gifts
to explore the spiritual sphere through the development of
our visions, dreams, and imagination. We then meditate and
incubate on these ideas and in our minds eye we influence
and change it, and by extension we influence and change the
environment.
